DWI patrols to increase dramatically around July 4

Hundreds arrested in 2011

SAN ANTONIO – The Fourth of July is the holiday with the highest rate of fatal DWI-related crashes, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

Local police are well aware of this, and will be out in force both Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Last year, DPS arrested hundreds during the same time period.

Locally, expect more than a dozen extra state troopers patrolling the streets.

San Antonio police will also have extra officers patrolling, hiring off-duty officers on an over-time basis with money from a recent grant.

If you've had too much to drink, there are plenty of ways to get home safely.

AAA Texas is offering its Tipsy Tow service, which provides drivers with a free tow to their home, within 10 miles of where they are.

Any tow longer than 10 miles, though, and drivers will be charged.

For more information on the service, call 1-800-222-4357.
