Caretaker accused of taking woman's money
John Braden charged with misappropriation of fiduciary funds
SAN ANTONIO – A man who was appointed as legal guardian for a 79-year-old Northeast Side woman is accused of taking advantage of her instead, by stealing tens of thousands of dollars from her.
San Antonio police arrested John Braden Tuesday on a charge of misappropriation of fiduciary funds. His bond was set at $50,000.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Adult Protective Services notified the police department's White Collar Crimes division about the missing money back in April.
Detectives who investigated discovered more than $195,000 had been withdrawn from the woman's various bank accounts by way of credit card charges, checks written and cash withdrawals, the affidavit stated.
Police said it appears none of the money was spent to the benefit of the woman. They said Braden had power of attorney over her affairs, and it appears he is responsible for the missing funds.
The affidavit stated that investigators believe Braden had been taking the money during a time period between Dec. 2010 and Jan. 2012.
