Child abduction suspect was 'wanted man'

David Kellum, 25, faces a long list of charges

SAN ANTONIO – The suspect in the alleged abduction of his girlfriend's 7-month-old baby already was a wanted man.

A police report shows David Kellum, 25, had several warrants out for his arrest when police said he took his girlfriend's baby from her arms and drove off, leading officers on a wild chase.

The baby's mother called 911 around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday after the confrontation with Kellum in the 100 block of Hickman Street, police said.

"She did not want to get into the vehicle with the suspect due to his level of intoxication, said Officer Matthew Porter, spokesman for the San Antonio Police Dept. "She was trying to go back into her apartment with the child and the two began to struggle over the child."

A Bexar County sheriff's deputy was the first to spot Kellum, in the area of Interstate 35 and San Pedro Avenue, the report said. He, along with SAPD officers, tried to stop Kellum several times to no avail, the report said.

"The suspect was all over the road, taking substantial risks, putting his life in danger along with that child," Porter said.

Porter said officers backed off from following Kellum several times for the safety of the child. He led them on a chase along I-35 to Highway 90, exited at Cupples Road, then doubled back onto Highway 90 to I-35, the report stated.

"The route that the suspect was taking led officers to believe that he was trying to get back to the initial scene," Porter said.

Officers finally managed to stop Kellum outside the apartment building where the trouble started.

They said the child was not hurt. Kellum was arrested on several charges, including driving while intoxicated with a child under the age of 15, and evading arrest.
