Exhaust fan blamed in elementary school fire

SAN ANTONIO – The arson unit is investigating an early morning fire at a North side charter school.

On Wednesday morning, firefighters called the fire suspicious, but once arson took a closer look, they were able to find the cause.

Investigators say the problem started in an exhaust fan in the electrical vents of a bathroom.

Flames broke out around midnight at the School of Excellence In Education in the 3700 block of Capitol Road.

Firefighters arrived and the building was engulfed in flames with smoke coming out of the roof. Crews managed to contain the fire to a portable building on the back of he campus, but an administrative building were heavily damaged.

A cause for the fire was unknown early Wednesday morning. Damages were estimated between $35,000 and $40,000.
