Man robs bank, fatally shoots self

Windcrest police investigating Wednesday robbery

WINDCREST, Texas – A man suspected of robbing a Windcrest bank at gunpoint Wednesday afternoon died when he turned the gun on himself after a chase with police, a city spokeswoman said.

Alfredo Leal, who was inside the bank at the time of the robbery, said the suspect walked in with a gun, demanded money from the teller, then ordered everyone to get on the ground.

Leal said once the suspect had the money, he ran back out.

"He just took the money from the girl at the counter and he took off running and said nobody call anybody, because I'm going to shoot everybody," said Leal.

Another witness said he saw the suspect leaving the scene, followed by police.

A city spokeswoman said the suspect made it to the 8400 block of Corto Circle, realized he was surrounded, then turned the gun on himself.

The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital where he died.
