Bexar deputy shot during birthday celebration

Off-duty deputy shot in hand, expected to recover

SAN ANTONIO – An off-duty Bexar County sheriff's deputy was wounded early Monday morning after a shooting at his home.

San Antonio police were called to the 2300 block of Marilyn Kay around 4 a.m.

Investigators said the off-duty deputy, who works at the detention center, was celebrating his 26th birthday with friends and co-workers when he got into an argument with woman who may have been his girlfriend.

Guests told police the deputy went into his bedroom and they heard a gunshot a short time later.

The deputy suffered a significant wound to his hand and was taken to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and said someone may have been inside the bedroom.

Officials said the deputy has been with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office for 4 to 5 years. His name has not been released.
