SAN ANTONIO – Drunk driving is a major problem in Bexar County.
Last year, 51 people were arrested on charges of intoxication manslaughter or assault.
In fact, Texas continually leads the nation in alcohol-related fatalities and we need to do better.
Way too many drunk drivers get off way too easy in Bexar County as juries seem to sympathize more with the drunk drivers instead of their victims.
This has to stop.
Probation is hardly enough punishment for the crimes these people commit on our roads every night.
But unfortunately, probation can be an option in just about any crime here and Texas is one of only six states where judges can't overturn those easy sentences.
More people need to see drunk driving as unacceptable and take action to stop impaired drivers from getting behind the wheel.
