Rene Moreno sentenced to 20 years in prison in fatal wreck

Ashlee Fleming killed in head-on collision

SAN ANTONIO – Rene Moreno, 27, said he had at least 13 drinks at several bars and at a party the night he drove the wrong way on Interstate 10, killing a Boerne teenager.

He was sentenced on Thursday to 20 years in the girl's death, the maximum sentence under the law.

Ashlee Fleming, 19, was fatally injured when Moreno's truck, going about 55 miles an hour, collided head-on with the sedan she was driving.

Moreno testified that he has no memory of the wreck, only a hospital visit from a police officer as he was being treated for injuries her sustained.

"I remember he told me that I killed someone," Moreno said. "I don't remember the accident."

He said that he had a poor driving history, noting he had been involved in at least five accidents in the past several years.

Moreno admitted this was not the first time he had driven after drinking but said he was never arrested.

"I was just lucky," he said.
