SA celebrities boxing for a cause

Nov. 2 gala will benefit South Texas Hispanic Fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation

SAN ANTONIO – Some San Antonio celebrities are putting on the boxing gloves and climbing into the ring -- all for a good cause.

They will be helping raise money for the South Texas Hispanic Fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation.

"It's a great cause (and) a great way of raising money for people in need," said Ricardo Ruiz, owner of Cha Cha's Restaurant and one of the fighters.

San Antonio's own world boxing title holder, "Jesse" James Leija, is part of the fight night, lending his name to the organization and his knowledge to the boxers.

"They help so many families, so many different organizations (and) so many different charities," Leija said.

He is helping to train the boxers to get ready for fight night.

"At first, they were just ... in there to play around and then they started training for three months and they started getting hit while they were sparring and they said, 'This ain't no joke,'" Leija said.

The training has also helped the boxers get healthy.

"I have totally transformed myself (and) have lost about 45 pounds," Ruiz said.

There will be five bouts featuring men and one bout featuring women.

Vanessa Macias, from the Y100 morning show, will be taking on Guadalupe Garza, from St Mary's University.

"This is so not Jazzersize," Macias said. "This is the real deal. It hurts when people hit you in the face."

The fifth-annual Ringside Gala will be held Nov. 2 at the Freeman Coliseum.
