SAN ANTONIO – A vacant apartment building located just north of downtown San Antonio went up in flames Monday evening.

San Antonio firefighters responded to the fire in the 1200 block of East Mulberry just before 7 p.m.

Fire officials said the complex was formerly known as the Brackenridge Hill Apartments and scheduled for demolition.

The complex was surrounded by a chain link fence and private security was hired to keep an eye on the property which had problem with homeless squatters. San Antonio fire officials believe the fire was intentionally set.

"They're still looking into the details of that but at this time since there's no electricity, no gas, no way for an accidental fire. They've determined it's going to be arson," said Assistant Chief Robert Mikel with the San Antonio Fire Department.
