Matt Rivers uncle in New Jersey tells KSAT Superstorm Sandy is "worst" storm he's seen

Jim Rivers did not evacuate ahead of Sandy, plans to ride out storm

SAN ANTONIO – Jim Rivers saw many a hairy situation as a firefighter in Perth Amboy, New Jersey for the better part of three decades—but none of it compared to this.

"I think this storm is the worst I've seen by far," said Rivers, who's the uncle of KSAT reporter Matt Rivers.

Rivers and his family live in Barnegat, New Jersey, about a mile from open water. He spent a lot of time preparing for the storm, although with one big regret.

"I should have boarded up my windows, because you never know what could get picked up and tossed through," said Rivers.

It's the storm surge that has the long-time fisherman worried, however, as high tide rolls in during the night.

The ocean has already started to spill over in many spots up and down the east coast.

Rivers said the majority of people heeded evacuation warnings, however, and will ride out the storm the best they can.
