Trader Joe's now open for business

Hotly anticipated grocery opening draws big crowds

SAN ANTONIO – The economy in the Alamo City is getting a boost from a brand new Trader Joe's, which opened its doors Friday morning at the Quarry to big crowds.

The hotly anticipated grocery chain is creating new jobs and giving back to the community.

Rachel Gates said she drove all the way from Austin and waited nearly 12 hours outside of the front doors of the Trader Joe's, located in the Quarry Village.

Gates, a self-proclaimed Trader Joe's devotee, wanted to be the first person inside the South Texas' first Trader Joe's.

"This stuff is awesome," Gates said.

Trader Joe's is a California-based company. The new San Antonio store is one of the just five in Texas.

Its popularity stems from their own out-of-the-ordinary products and low prices.

But while it's a foodie favorite for sure, Trader Joe's coming to San Antonio means more commerce and more job.

"We don't disclose actual numbers of jobs but I can say about 75 percent of our crew members are from ... San Antonio," manager Jorge Macias said.
