Police: Houston man travels to SA for sex with teen

Mohommed Rafiq charged with online solicitation

SAN ANTONIO – Mohommed Rafiq, 59, who lives in the Houston area, is accused of traveling to San Antonio to meet up and have sex with what he believed was a 15-year old-girl .

In reality, the "teen" was a San Antonio Police Department Vice detective.

Officer Matthew Porter, spokesman for SAPD, said Rafiq began talking with the detective in an online chatroom, believing the whole time that the person on the other end was underage.

"He was chatting with someone he believed to be a 15-year-old female," Porter said. "They agreed on a time and a location to meet to engage in a sexual act."

When Rafiq showed up at the undisclosed location Wednesday afternoon, Porter said, detectives were waiting. They arrested him on one count of online solicitation of a minor.

Rafiq was booked into the Bexar County jail late Thursday morning with bond set at $20,000.

Porter said this type of crime happens fairly often.

However, he said it is unusual to travel the distance that Rafiq did. Records show he lives in the Woodlands, north of Houston.

"So you're talking about a three hour drive," Porter said.

Also unusual is the age of this suspect. In many cases, those arrested are in their 20s and 30s, he said.

Porter said detectives constantly patrol the internet for instances like this. He warns anyone who may be considering meeting minors online for sex to reconsider.

"Think twice," Porter said.
