Suspect arrested in shooting over drug debt in east San Antonio

San Antonio police: Victim shot by Roland Ponce on Hicks Avenue while attempting to collect debt

A 23-year-old suspect was taken into custody in connection with a shooting San Antonio police believe was over a two year old drug debt.

The suspect was identified as Roland Ponce early Friday morning. Investigators believe Ponce opened fire on the victim at his home in the 1400 block of Hicks Avenue Thursday afternoon.

San Antonio police believe the victim went to Ponce's home to collect a drug debt and was shot four times.

The victim was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition.

Ponce said he shot the victim in self-defense, but San Antonio police investigators said the evidence did not add up.

The investigation is ongoing and Ponce has been charged with attempted murder, San Antonio police said.
