Volunteer chefs gear up for 35th annual Cowboy Breakfast

Several volunteers prepped a makeshift kitchen in the parking lot of the Cowboys Dance Hall late Thursday night.

The site will serve as the base of operations for the 35th annual Cowboy Breakfast.

Starting at midnight, dozens of culinary students from St. Phillip's College will began cooking the 500 pounds of bacon and 1,200 pounds of sausage needed to make the event's signature breakfast taco.

The annual event draws 35 to 40,000 people every year, but organizers said the recent unseasonably hot weather could make this year the biggest.

"You'd have on long underwear and maybe another pair of pants, maybe another pair of pants, and a shirt and you'd be freezing," said logistics coordinator Bill Massey.

The Cowboy Breakfast starts at 4:30 a.m Friday morning and ends at 8:30 a.m.

The food is free.
