Girl, 14, finds mother killed, brother hurt

HOUSTON – A teenager found her mother stabbed to death and her brother critically injured in their southwest Houston home.

Houston police said a teenager was staying with friends, but when she couldn't reach anyone at her house in the 2800 block of Tidewater Drive, she went home at 11:30 p.m. Sunday and made the gruesome discovery. She went to a neighbor's home for help.

"She hadn't heard from her mother or brother in a while, probably since Saturday," Officer W.L. Meeler said. "She got in the house and found her mother stabbed to death and her 13-year-old brother clinging to life."

The mother was identified as 43-year-old Jemal Lockridge Chambers. Detectives said there were signs that she put up a fight.

"You could see stab wounds in her neck," neighbor Robert Chavis said. "Her face was all bloody. Blood was all over the floor."

Chambers' 13-year-old son suffered blunt force trauma and was taken to Texas Children's Hospital for treatment. Police said he was attacked when he tried to save his mother.

Police said that they have taken Chambers' husband, Lawrence, into custody. He is the stepfather of the children. Charges against him were pending.

Detectives have not said if Lawrence Chambers, 40, was in Jemal Chambers' car, which was missing from the home. It was described as a 2013 white Toyota Corolla with Texas license plate BKD 5345.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
