A man is dead after a rear-end crash and a desperate but failed rescue attempt by a passing private ambulance crew.
An off duty sheriff's deputy rear-ended that driver as the man either stopped or slowed to a near-crawl on Hwy 90 eastbound near Nogalitos around 3:45 p.m. Sunday.

The impact slammed the man's car into a retaining wall.
The ambulance crew driving near the accident saw the victim and stopped to help.
They performed CPR until city EMS personnel could arrive.
But police say the rescue attempt failed and the man died at the crash site.
His name had not yet been released.
Two passengers in his car also were hurt but are expected to be okay.
