Armed robbery suspect arrested after standoff with police

Suspect identified as Matthew Taylor Mays, 21

A suspect involved in an early morning armed robbery Saturday was arrested after a standoff with San Antonio police officers.

Police said Matthew Taylor Mays, 21, and another person robbed four people at gunpoint in the 2000 block of Babcock Road around 2:00 am.

One of the victims said they knew Mays and detectives traced him back to his apartment in the 5900 block of Danny Kaye Drive.

Police said Mays refused to leave the apartment.

"There were patrols on the ground that saw the suspect looking out the window. He was acknowledging police so he knew we were there," said Officer Matthew Porter. "He could have come out at any time with his hands up and he chose not to. He chose to go this route so at that point the negotiators and SWAT team were called out."

Surrounding apartments were evacuated as negotiators tried to convince Mays to surrender.

"Due to the fact that there was a weapon involved in the initial crime, obviously we're not going to go in forcing entry," said Porter. "Public safety is our chief concern."

Police said there were four other people inside Mays' apartment during the standoff. The standoff lasted for several hours until each person eventually left the apartment.

Mays was charged with one count of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. Porter said more charges could be filed next week.

Detectives are still searching for the other suspect involved in the armed robbery.

The incident was Mays' second run-in with law enforcement in the last several months.

In September, he was charged with a third-degree felony for allegedly fracturing the skull and legs of his 6-month-old boy.
