San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro touts downtown development

Mayor delivers State of the City chamber speech Tuesday

SAN ANTONIO – Mayor Julian Castro told the members of four area chambers of commerce that San Antonio is on course to becoming one of the nation's truly great cities.

"Great cities have great downtowns and we need to continue to make that investment," Castro said during his luncheon speech on Tuesday.

Castro said that this is the decade of downtown.

"By the close of this year, more than 2,500 new housing units will go up in our downtown area, invigorating downtown and changing its landscape," he said.

The key to downtown growth, Castro told the gathering, is a unique inventive-oriented partnership between the city and the private sector.

Castro also said the city is taking great strides in the areas of job growth, energy and education.
