KSAT 12 Editorial: Consolidate local governments, schools

SAN ANTONIO – As lawmakers struggle to do more with less, we think they should seriously consider ways to make things more efficient.

That includes consolidating resources- from city and county services to school districts.

Together, Bexar County and the city of San Antonio oversee two public works departments, three law enforcement agencies and four court systems.

And our school systems are the most repetitive of all. There are 16 different independent school districts that serve the Bexar County area.

Many other cities bigger than San Antonio manage to run schools under one seamless roof. There's no reason why we can't do the same.

Considering that Texas lawmakers cut more than $5.4 billion from public education in 2011 and have to make tougher choices, merging some things seems like a reasonable part of the discussion.

Let's not overlook the merits of considering some common-sense ideas like this.
