SAN ANTONIO – On Friday, county officials kicked off construction on the county's first bookless library.
"It's a bookless library, a breakthrough in the way that we bring the opportunity for people to read, to learn and to get into the world technology," said Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff.
The new library is called BiblioTech, a 4,989-square-foot facility that will be filled wall-to-wall with computers, laptops and tablets, as well as some interactive walls and tables for the kids.
Patrons will also be able to check out one of a 100 eReaders that will be in circulation, not to mention, having access to a collection of 10,000 books by using their own mobile devices.
"I was talking to some kids yesterday," said District 3 San Antonio City Councilwoman Leticia Ozuna. "They came up to me with their iPads in their hand and I said, 'Can you imagine in just a few short months, you're going to be able to walk into a place and walk out with over a hundred books?'"
BiblioTech will be located on the city's south side, right in the middle of the Harlandale Independent School District.
"I think it's the beginning," said Commissioner Sergio "Chico" Rodriguez. "I'm glad that it started here on the south side and I think every commissioner is starting to look at it now, about when is it going to come into their backyard."
3M will be providing a demonstration of the Cloud Library on Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Leal Middle School.
On Tuesday, commissioners will consider a final approval with 3M to provide the e-reader services.
The digital library is set to open in the next few months.
