Police called the incident a rolling disturbance that happened after a couple driving a stolen car argued and crashed into a fence just before 8 p.m.

They said the boyfriend got out of the car and walked into the the highway.

Police say he began waving his hands trying to get a ride.

Investigators say he managed to cross several lanes of traffic before two officers arrived on scene.

"He was up against a car when they started to search him at that point they were going to put handcuffs on him, he began to struggle, they went to the ground and at some point during the struggle he went into cardiac arrest. He was transported to the hospital where he later died," said Officer Matt Porter from the San Antonio Police Department.

Traffic was backed up for several miles on the east bound lanes of Highway 90, as crime scene investigators processed the scene.

The two officers who responded weren't injured.

Police said an autopsy will be done on the victim's body to determine his exact cause of death.
