Loop 1604 traffic congestion relief on the way

Four-lane highway to become expressway

The Texas Transportation Commission has approved issuance of Requests for Proposals to develop and design-build project for the Loop 1604 Western Expansion Project.

"What we're doing is selecting one private entity to take care of the design and the construction phase," said Josh Donat, with the Texas Department of Transportation.

The $120 million-project will expand a 4.7-mile section of Loop 1604 from a four-lane roadway.

The project will add bridge interchanges at Shaenfield, New Gilbeau and Braun roads with an option to complete development through the Highway 151 interchange.

It will also eliminate the so-called "Michigan turn lanes," also known as super-street turn lanes, which were set up as a temporary fix to the area's traffic congestion headaches.

"It's the difference between Little League baseball and Major League baseball," Donet said. "What we did was a successful temporary fix."

Though a firm completion date has not been determined, Donat said the project should take at least two years.
