Methodist Hospital cardiologist Dr. Jorge "George" Alvarez was recognized on Thursday, for his efforts in helping victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.
Alvarez was volunteering helping runners with dehydration or cramps at the finish line, as his wife competed in the race.
"This was going to be kind of an easy day for us, compared to what we do on a regular basis, and the way we get to take care of other people," said Alvarez. "Dehydration and cramps was going to be kind of boring."
But that fateful day, ended up being one of his most trying, as Alvarez turned from physician to first-responder, helping the injured.
"Looking back now a little bit, I can come to the understanding that I can be can be happy that I was there to help out," Alvarez said.
On Thursday, Methodist Hospital CEO Gay Nord held a reception in honor of Alvarez's efforts.
"He's a great physician, he's a great leader, in this hospital and it was absolutely no surprise to us to see what he did when he was at the Boston Marathon," said Nord.
Dr. Alvarez and his wife, Becky, were both uninjured in the bombings. Becky completed the race 30 minutes before the bombs went off.
