Floats kicked out of Battle of Flowers parade
Thousands line Broadway to take in parade despite threat of rain
Reports of several floats being kicked out of Friday's Battle of Flowers parade have been confirmed by KSAT 12.
SAPD booted the floats at the request of parade organizers-- including that of El Rey Feo's -- for throwing beads, medals and other souvenir items from the float to the people lining the Broadway parade route.
SAPD said parade organizers gave repeated warnings for those on the floats against throwing items off the floats.
Otherwise, the thousands of people who lined the streets of downtown San Antonio for this year's Battle of Flowers parade partied on, despite the lingering threat of rain.
For many, the event has been a family tradition.
"I'm here with my grandkids. They're enjoying it and I got the day off," said Gina Villalobos, who was parade regular as a child herself.
Then there were newcomers to San Antonio and Fiesta, with friends and family back home.
"I'm going to tell them I had my doubts about coming," said parade-goer Jim Brown. "I'm glad I came and I'm looking forward to it again next year."
Brown and his wife Sarah are a military couple now stationed in San Antonio.
Watching the passing bands and floats, his wife said coming to the parade has changed her opinion of San Antonio.
"I love San Antonio because this has actually been wonderful," she said. "The ambiance of all this, bringing the families together and celebrating the city is awesome."
