Canyon Lake resort damaged by fire

12 units in timeshare condo heavily damaged

CANYON LAKE, Texas – A Canyon Lake resort suffered damage from a fire Wednesday afternoon.

The fire broke out in a time share condominium building at the Silverleaf Hill Country Resort around 4:20 p.m.

"All the sudden smoke started coming out of the building so we came over here and all we could see was flames coming straight through the roof," said Ryan Herz, a guest who witnessed the fire.

Herz was swimming at the resort's pool with family members when the fire broke out.

He grabbed his phone and snapped several pictures as the flames quickly spread from the third floor of the building.

"It was a good size fire, you could tell it was hot because the actual metal on the roof started bowing and buckling before it came out," Herz said.

Everyone inside the building made it out safely on their own. When fire fighters arrived they evacuated guests from the two buildings next to the burning unit.

"It was intense and then finally the one side just actually caved in just from the heat," Herz said.

Fire fighters from four area departments responded to the resort, which sits on the north side of the lake.

Canyon Lake Fire Chief Shawn Wherry said his crews were able to contain the fire in about 15 minutes but the damage was already done.

"There was fire damage to the 3rd floor and fire suppression damage to the second and first floors and then there was radiant heat damage to the vinyl siding on both sides of the structure," Wherry said.

Fire officials said it appears the fire started in one of the third floor condos but no cause has been determined.

The Comal County Fire Marshall will be back at the scene Thursday morning to resume the investigation.
