KSAT 12 Editorial: SA rallies behind young mariachi singer

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio's own Sebastien de la Cruz made headlines all over the world when he sang the national anthem last week.

In a black and silver mariachi outfit, Sebastien showed his Mexican heritage and Spurs pride along with his enormous talent as he belted out "The Star Spangled Banner" before Game 3.

But, apparently he didn't fit some people's image of an appropriate singer for the national anthem. He instantly became the target of ignorant and racist remarks all over the Internet.

Sebastien didn't let that get him down. He responded with class beyond his 11 years and the Spurs invited him back to sing before Game 4.

Everybody from Mayor Castro to Coach Popovich to the President himself rallied behind Sebastien, too.

America is all about celebrating diversity. There should be no place for bigotry like this anywhere - especially not in San Antonio.

We commend the NBA and the Spurs for standing up for what's right and showing the haters how wrong they are.

Let us know what you think.
