Police: Man buys beer, leaves baby behind

Hans Christian Andersen, 36, charged with child abandonment

SAN ANTONIO – Hans Christian Andersen, 36, of San Antonio, is accused of leaving his 6-month-old daughter inside a neighborhood store where he went to buy beer late Tuesday night.

Juan Martinez, who works at Garden Food Mart, in the 1300 block of Gardina Street, said he was surprised to discover the child around 10 p.m., sleeping in her stroller in the middle of the aisle.

Martinez alerted his boss, who called 911.

"I was waiting but he didn't come so I had to call the police," said Naveed Khan. "Thirty minutes. After that, the police came. But he came back at one hour."

When Andersen returned, he was arrested by police and later booked into the Bexar County jail on a charge of abandoning a child.

Khan said the discovery came as a shock.

He said Andersen is a regular customer who visits the store, always with the baby in tow, as many as six times per day.

"Only alcohol," Khan said. "Sometimes (he buys) chips or snacks or soda."

A woman who answered the door at an apartment nearby said she was the mother of the baby.

However, she declined to answer any questions about Andersen or the events that led to his arrest.

Khan said officials with Child Protective Services took custody of the baby girl at the scene.
