New Braunfels to see big holiday travel rush
Vacationers stretching 4th of July holiday over long weekend
NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – The Fourth of July holiday weekend has turned into a holiday week for many -- especially in the New Braunfels area.
"You'll see a three-night stay turn into a four- or five-night stay," said Brad Pemberton, general manager of Hill Country RV resort in New Braunfels. "We're definitely seeing that this year."
The resort was nearly at capacity on Wednesday, with few vacancies among the 300 RV spots and 65 cottages.
"We have people that come just as a destination to come here. We have pools, hot tubs, a couple of amenities on-site," said Pemberton.
"We wanted to be near all the attractions in New Braunfels, Schlitterbahn, Gruene Hall," added Robin Waller, of Mont Belvieu.
"We kind of make that into a family tradition now," said Ismael Olivas, who came in from New Mexico to meet other family members. "I bring my trailer and they bring their trailers out here and we all get together and we float the river."
The rivers, both the Guadalupe and Comal, were also slowly filling up before the holiday weekend.
"We just all happened to be off today so it all worked out," said Ann Davis who drove up from San Antonio with co-workers.
"Tomorrow, it will be way too crazy, and I don't want to be here with a bunch of crazy people," said Kenna Salinas who also came up from San Antonio with her sister and friend.
Large crowds are expected by river outfitters and not just on one or two days this week.
"Instead of having one really huge day, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday will all be big days," said Texas Tubes owner Coley Reno.
"It's the most relaxing thing in the world," said Davis. "You don't have to do anything, you just sit there."
