Motorcyclist killed in crash north of downtown
Police say rider not wearing a helmet when he crashed
SAN ANTONIO – A motorcyclist is dead after a crash just north of downtown.
The crash happened around 2:45 a.m. Saturday near San Pedro and Elmira.
Police say 52-year-old Sergio Gonzales lost control on a curve, hit a curb and was thrown from the bike.
Investigators said Gonzales was westbound on West Elmira when he lost control of his motorcycle and slammed into a curb on the northbound side of the street.
The impact stopped the motorcycle and Gonzales was ejected.
He was not wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gonzales' death is the eight motorcycle fatality in San Antonio in the last four weeks.
San Antonio police chief William McManus said the city has started discussing a potential public education campaign to promote driver safety.
"We'll be doing a PSA on traffic safety coming up very soon, trying to get the word out, he said. "It has to go beyond enforcement. I think awareness pays a big role in traffic safety."
