Boarded-up home catches fire

SAFD: Ammunition reported inside, did not combust

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio firefighters spent Friday morning battling a fire at a home in the 1200 block of Vermont.

Neighbors reported seeing flames at around 9 a.m.

When firefighters first arrived, they thought the house was not occupied.

The house was boarded up and made it harder for firefighters to put out the flames.

"We had a lot of trouble getting in (and had to) extinguish from the outside," said Jacob Mendiola, with the San Antonio Fire Department.

Firefighters were eventually able to get back inside.

Another concern was ammunition inside the home. But the flames didn't get close enough to set it off.

The homeowner was not at home at the time.

Damage is estimated at around $25,000.

The cause of fire is still being investigated.
