Daylong fundraiser benefits child with brain tumor in hospice care

Murf's Better Burgers on West Ave. donates half of day's proceeds

SAN ANTONIO – Customers crowded into Murf's Better Burgers in the 2900 block of West Ave. and its drive-thru was non-stop in response to a daylong fundraiser Friday to benefit Savannah Gomez.

The six-year-old has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and is now in hospice care.

To help cover that cost, restaurant owner Tony Serrano and his wife, who know Savannah and her family, offered to donate half of the day's proceeds.

"God has the last word. This is what we can do physically, but spiritually? Spiritually, we can do a lot more, a lot more than this," Serrano said.

The fundraiser that began at 10 a.m. will wrap up at 11 p.m.

Serrano and his crew were building their signature burgers and frying up fries as quickly as they could to keep up with the demand.

"It's worth it. I'll wait as long as I have to," said Jennifer Nedderman, as she sat in line at the drive-thru.

Nedderman had learned about the child's plight on Savannah's Facebook page.

Juan Rodriguez said after seeing it on the news, he spread the word among his fellow accountants.

"We got our co-workers together and decided to come over here and grab a bite," Rodriguez said.

Savannah's cheer squad had ordered 35 hamburgers.

"It's overwhelming. We started to see the flood of people coming in. It's awesome," said Griselda Barrera, the Little Giants cheer coordinator.

Serrano said he was grateful to see so many willing to help Savannah and her family.

He said, "They're in need. That's when we get together."
