Bexar County Democrats host 'family reunion'

Get-out-the-vote effort held at La Villita

SAN ANTONIO – Bexar County Democrats are starting to focus on the next election by holding a local get-out-the-vote effort at La Villita on Friday.

Organizers are calling the fundraiser a "family reunion" and are opening it up to the public.

Several speakers are expected to take the stage Friday night, but the featured guest is State Sen. Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth.)

Davis has been in the spotlight since her dramatic filibuster earlier this year that delayed the  abortion bill.

Bexar County Democratic Party Chairman Manuel Medina said they are looking at Davis to take the lead as they get ready for 2014.

While some speculate the Republicans will have a strong presence with Attorney General Gregg Abbott running for governor, Medina said the Democrats are getting stronger.

"We won 43 out of 50 races," said Medina. "Next year, we expect to win 50 out of 50 races and the same thing is happening across the state of Texas. This state is going blue. Wendy Davis is going to lead us there."

More than 200 Democratic Party chairs from across the state are also expected to show up at the "family reunion."
