SAN ANTONIO – The home at 430 Edna, in the the Willow Park Coliseum Oaks neighborhood, has been vacant for nine years.
Dilapidated, it is the picture of neglect.
"It's just an eyesore for the neighbors. You know you have seniors in the neighborhood and they would like to see something done," said homeowner Brett Carter.
The Defenders brought the home to the city's attention last summer, and then again in March, several months after the owner was put on notice.
"You shouldn't have to wait eight years to have to get something done to go file the paperwork and all this stuff," Carter said.
In April, the Building Standards Board made the decision to tear down the property.
Four months later, a Komatsu and crew were parked outside the East Side home.
Then, around 9 a.m. on Friday, the owner showed up -- paper in hand -- in an attempt to stop the demolition of his long-time home.
A quick call to the city delayed the bulldozer, but only until the city attorney had a chance to review the appeal.
"We actually did review that and we found it is not valid in terms of stopping us to abate the hazard," said City of San Antonio Assistant Director to Development Services Michael Shannon.
After months of due process, a hearing and appeals opportunities, the owner's effort was too little, too late.
By 4 p.m. the home at 430 Edna had been leveled.
