Lightning strike believed to be cause of fire on Northside

Neighbors alert homeowner to get out of the house

SAN ANTONIO – A man in the Northside is thanking his neighbors after a lightning strike sets his home on fire.

Authorities believe a lightning strike during Saturday's thunderstorms set the fire at the home at West Bitters Road and Inwood Cove.

San Antonio Fire Department said the man reported smelling smoke inside his home.

"I went outside and looked around and [said] our neighbor's house is on fire!" said Samantha Watkins, who lives near the homeowner. "I yelled for my dad, 'Dad John's house is on fire,' we [then] ran over, burst through the door and said John get out."

"Very very gracious they came and alerted me to get out at the time they did," said John Butler, the homeowner."

Most of the damage was contained to the attic.

No one was hurt.
