SAFD: Child may have set fire on Southwest side

Fire still under investigation

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Fire Department believes a child playing with a lighter may have caused a fire at at a Southwest side home Saturday night.

It happened just after 7:30 at a one-story home on Daytona Street.

No one was at home at the time of the fire. Someone had walked into the home and noticed the whole house had filled up with smoke and then called 911.

"Reports from the occupant that was not home at the time, it's a female and three children and that she caught her children, one of her children, playing with a lighter this morning," said Captain Pedro Garza. "She thought she had put everything out, so this could possibly be a child playing with matches incident."

Captain Garza said they haven't entirely placed the blame on a child and have arson investigators looking into the cause of the fire.

No one was hurt.

The fire appeared to have started in the back bedroom of the house. Damage is estimated at about $10,000.

The Red Cross is assisting the family.
