Chemical smell causes evacuation at northwest San Antonio apartments

Richland Apartment Homes residents complained of burning eyes, noses

SAN ANTONIO – A strong chemical smell caused an evacuation at a northwest San Antonio apartment complex early Monday morning.

Hazmat crews responded to the Richland Apartment Homes in the 7700 block of Woodchase around midnight after residents complained of a chemical smell burning their eyes and noses.

San Antonio fire officials said thirteen apartments were evacuated as Hazmat checked the air quality and looked for the source of the smell.

Apartment staff said one of an apartment unit was being remodeled, and the counter tops and cabinets were being resurfaced.

Staff opened the windows in the apartment unit to air out the building, and after a second test, everyone was allowed back inside.

Three people were evaluated by paramedics, but no one was taken to the hospital, fire officials said.
