Police said a trail of blood led up to the door of the bar, then doubled back, as if the victim was looking for help after the altercation.

A man drove by the bar and told police he saw the victim lying in the road, covered in blood.

"My initial thought when I saw him was (that he was) dead, but when I turned back around, he was standing up. So I called him (and) yelled out of my window," said Juan Alvarado. "He was conscious and talking to us. He had told us that he was in the bar, and that they had roughed him up. He didn't say they had stabbed him. We didn't know at the time."

Hauswirth told police he was playing pool with friends until the bar closed.

Once outside, he noticed his friends were gone, and said someone punched him from behind, then stabbed him.

Alvarado called for police and Hauswirth was taken to University Hospital in serious condition with multiple stab wounds.
