SAN ANTONIO – One man is dead, after authorities say he was shot by an off-duty Bexar County deputy early Saturday morning.
It happened around 5 a.m. Saturday off of Loop 1604, between Nacogdoches and Lookout Road.
Paul Berry, a spokesman for the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, said the off-duty deputy was driving home in his personal vehicle after leaving a security job when he got into a car accident with the man.
Berry said they pulled over to the side of the road to wait for police, but then started to fight. That's when Berry said the off-duty deputy fired his gun,
"It appears that they were involved in an accident," said Berry. "They pulled to the side and a verbal altercation began. Apparently, it escalated. That's when our deputy fired shots."
Berry said the off-duty deputy fired multiple shots, hitting the man and killing him.
As of Saturday evening, Berry said it was not clear if the other man was armed.
"It's too early to know exactly what happened, but it appears that obviously the deputy felt threatened and felt that he had to take action," said Berry. "But, we do not know the circumstances that led up to the shooting at this point."
Also under investigation as of Saturday was how many shots were fired at the man and the accident itself.
As standard procedure, the off-duty deputy will be placed on administrative leave for 10 days.
The name of the man who was shot and killed has not been released at this time.
