Hunters hit fields as dove-hunting season begins for parts of Texas

Hunting season time for family togetherness

SAN ANTONIO – Dove-hunting season started Sept. 1 for parts of Texas, and hunters flocked to fields in East Bexar County Monday morning.

Three generations of the Dill family came from across Texas to hunt at a day lease near Loop 1604 and Interstate 10.

"It's obviously not about hitting all the birds we want to shoot," Charles Dill said.

The family has fun getting together, and even the younger children -- Maddi, 9, and Chase, 7 -- have their part.

"I'm really pretty much just finding them, and then telling my dad where they are," Maddi said.

Lisa Dill, the family matriarch, enjoys the shooting more than cleaning the birds, but said she isn't the best shot.

"My husband (is better) by far. He's been doing this all his life. He grew up hunting for food," she said.

Once the family has gathered enough birds for a feast, they get together again for a barbecue.

"You split a breast, put in a big chunk of onion and a jalapeno pepper, wrap it in hickory smoked bacon and grill it over mesquite slowly and then put a glaze on it," Lisa Dill said.
