Driver dies after crash through iron fence at South San Antonio home
San Antonio police: Driver ran stop sign, jumped curb at W. Drexel, S. Presa
SAN ANTONIO – A driver died after he crashed through an iron fence at a South Side home early Tuesday morning, San Antonio police said.
The driver was headed down W. Drexel Avenue around 2:30 a.m. when police believe he kept going where the road dead ends at S. Presa Street.
"It appears he ran the stop sign and continued across S. Presa and struck the front porch of a house," said San Antonio police spokesman Officer Roger Zuniga.
The vehicle continued and plowed through an iron fence before it came to a stop against the front porch of the home, San Antonio Police said.
The crash left behind a large hole in the fence -- between six and eight feet wide -- but damage to the home was minimal, police said.
Paramedics transported the driver to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. As of Tuesday at noon, his identity had not been released.
With limited damage, police said it was not immediately clear what caused the man's death.
"It's going be up to the medical examiner to make that determination. At this point, it's unknown. Officers at the scene noted he had major head trauma and was not wearing a seatbelt," Zuniga said.
