Man shot, killed by off-duty Bexar County deputy identified

Victim identified as 29-year-old Matthew Jackson; Deputy identified as Anthony Thomas

SAN ANTONIO – The identity of the man who was shot and killed by an off-duty Bexar County sheriff's deputy after an accident has been released.  

The Bexar County Medical Examiner identified the shooting victim as 29-year-old Matthew Jackson.

Jackson and the off-duty deputy, identified on Tuesday as Anthony Thomas, were involved in a traffic accident around 5 a.m. Saturday on Loop 1604 at Lookout Road.

Jackson and Thomas pulled over to wait for police, but got into some type of altercation. Thomas then pulled out a gun and opened fire on Jackson, killing him.

The sheriff's office said Jackson did not have a weapon on him when Thomas opened fire.

Thomas has been placed on administrative leave while officials conduct an investigation into the fatal shooting.

According to a sheriff's office official, Thomas works in Court Security and has been with BCSO for 16 years.
