SAN ANTONIO – With fall just around the corner, tis the season to pest proof you home!
Pest experts say rodents are particularly more active in cooler months because they're looking for safety and warmth.
KSAT first showed you a family who had rat problems. Many viewers were disgusted by the horrific living conditions.
After the husband caught one scurrying around the kitchen, they family moved out.
Homeowner Mike Rodriguez called a pest expert in to make sure he never had a problem like that.
Pest expert Jan Peterson found ways rodents could make a house their home.
"You can see, I can stick a couple of fingers in there, mice only need like the size of a dime, rats the size of a quarter to get in," Peterson said.
Prevent rodents from entering the home by checking inside and outside the house for gaps or holes.
According to Peterson, it doesn't matter if you live in a nice neighborhood - rodents don't discriminate.
One thing rodents are drawn to are barbeque pits. They can cause big problems if even the smallest amount of food is left behind.
"The leftover food and fat drippings, it's always good to keep that clean...keeping it sanitary is always a good idea," Peterson said.
Other places rodents target are doggy doors and trees. Peterson said they are access points for rodents to get in your house.
"If they can find a way in then they're going to get in," Peterson said.
Peterson is sure, if you are proactive and seal up small gaps and holes, rodents should not be a problem.
