Reports indicate the two officers -- who have been identified only as Officer Kierum, a 14-month veteran of the force, and Cpl. Balderamas, a 16-year veteran -- arrived at the home and identified themselves as law enforcement.

They were responding to a report of a disturbance at the home. A witness reported to 911 operators that man was dragging a screaming woman into the home.

While at the home, Selma City Administrator Ken Roberts said, Kierum and Balderamas "encountered Jessie Hernandez Jr., his wife, their two small children, his mother and stepfather."

Roberts said Hernandez ambushed the officers in his living room and opened fire on them with a pistol.

Kierum was shot in the face; Balderamas, in the leg, Roberts said.

One of the officers was able to return fire, hitting Jessie Hernandez twice.

Hernandez and both officers were taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.

Hernandez's wife was also taken to an area hospital for treatment in relation to injuries she suffered from being beaten by Hernandez, Roberts said.

A warrant was issued for Jessie Hernandez for a charge of aggravated assault on a public servant, Roberts said.

The Texas Rangers are assisting Selma police in investigating the incident.
