East Side teen killed in hunting accident
Hunting accident leaves East side boy, 14, dead
SAN ANTONIO – Lloyd Hayes, a popular freshman at East Central High School, has died as the result of a weekend hunting accident in Wilson County.
Relatives confirmed the 14-year-old accidentally tripped and shot himself Sunday while hunting birds on his family's property on County Road 118.
Neighbors reported seeing multiple Wilson County Sheriff's Office patrol cars on the property Sunday evening.
One man said he had seen the teen, who often visited the property which his family owns, cutting grass on a tractor earlier that day.
At the family's home in San Antonio's Lakeside subdivision Wednesday morning, a relative said Hayes had recently started attending East Central High School where he was a freshman.
He described the teen as polite, friendly, hard-working and well-liked.
The relative said as a tribute, students at all of the school district's campuses came to school earlier this week dressed in blue, Hayes' favorite color.
Stevie Gonzales, spokeswoman for East Central ISD, said the district has made grief counselors available to any of his classmates who may need them.
