Home invasion, beating puts South Side man in hospital

Police: 3 men kicked in door of home on Ware Boulevard

A South Side man who was the victim of a home invasion and beating is in the hospital recovering from his injuries.

San Antonio police received a 911 call about the incident around 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

They said an 18-year-old man and his girlfriend were inside their home in the 300 block of Ware Boulevard when three men kicked in the front door.

Police said the victim told his girlfriend to climb out a back window and run to safety, while he dealt with the intruders.

One of them reportedly had a gun.

A man who identified himself only as the victim's brother said the intruders came close to using the weapon to kill him.

"The culprit with the gun asked if they could turn the lights off, at which they were going to proceed to shoot my brother," he said. "My brother saw a moment of opportunity and was able to wrestle the gun away."

During the struggle, the gun discharged but no one was hit by gunfire, police said.

The victim, meanwhile, was punched and kicked by the intruders, his brother said.

"(He) suffered a lot of hits to the head (and is) missing teeth. And thank God no bullets hit him," he said.

According to police, the intruders ran off taking the man's backpack which contained money, and an Xbox game system.

However, his brother insists they left it all behind, and he wonders what they really were after.

"They had access to all the valuables during the initial break-in. They did not seem interested in that. They wanted to pursue into the bedroom," he said.

Police said they had only a vague description of the suspects, and the victim told them he did not know them.

However, they said the men somehow knew his name, police said.
