$2 million in grants from the Texas Department of Transportation was awarded to six local agencies Thursday.
One of the agencies that received half of the money was the San Antonio Police Department. Police Chief William McManus made it clear what the federal money will be used for.
"We have taken a holistic approach to addressing traffic safety and enforcement is a strong piece of that holistic approach, and that's what the money will go for," McManus said.
The grants are aimed at improving traffic and safety programs in the Alamo City and surrounding areas.
"Our effort is to make sure that people understand that when you choose to have too much to drink and you get behind that wheel, you're committing a selfish act, and it places everyone on the roadway at risk," said David Henderson of the Bexar County District Attorney's Office.
The district attorney's office received more than $187,000, which will expand and improve DWI enforcement and prosecution across Bexar County by operating an all-day/every day no-refusal DWI program.
The Bexar County's Commissioner's Office plans to use a portion of more than $220,000 it received toward a DWI Treatment Court.
"So we work together as a team to address subsequent offenders in hopes of saving lives and saving the community money," said Liza Rodriguez, Bexar County Court at Law Judge No. 8.
Other agencies that received grants were the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, the New Braunfels Police Department and the Alamo Area Council of Governments.
