SAPD television show makes comeback

Show informs about crime prevention

The San Antonio Police Department has re-launched a television show aimed at helping residents prevent crime, while giving an inside look at the department.

Written and produced entirely by SAPD officers, "Behind the Badge" initially aired in the 1990s, but disappeared for a period of a few years. The show re-launched in September of this year.

"It went on a hiatus for a couple of years, it was just something that fell by the wayside for whatever reason," said Sgt. Javier Salazar, the show's host, and spokesman for the San Antonio Police Department. "But now we're able to revive it in a bigger, better way."

Salazar said with the help of Facebook, YouTube and TVSA, the monthly program is able to reach a wider audience and expand its reach to include viewers who typically would not be able to access it otherwise.

According to Salazar, topics in the show vary from month to month, like October's episodes on DWI enforcement and ticketing aggressive drivers.

"I think it's important to get the message out and get the show going so people understand our point of view, because sometimes they don't get it," said SAPD Officer Roger Zuniga, the show's co-host. "We're just trying to get that message across."

Both Zuniga and Salazar said the show has received positive feedback from the community, and they encourage residents to tune in and submit their thoughts.

"Watch it with an open mind, be prepared to learn things about your police department," Salazar said. "May be everything you wanted to know, but were afraid to ask."

Aside from online, "Behind the Badge" airs on TVSA, which is Time Warner channel 21, Grande channel 21 and AT&T U-Verse channel 99.
