Dispute between two men leads to fatal shooting on Keats

SAPD: Shooter identified, but not in custody

A dispute between several family members early Monday ended when one man pulled out a gun and shot 35-year-old Roy Ruiz, San Antonio police said.

EMS responded to a home in the 1300 block of Keats, where Ruiz was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

"There was some type of confrontation between two male individuals that resulted in one ending up being ... fatally shot," said San Antonio police Sgt. Michael Garcia. "The individuals knew each other, at least for a short period of time."

Several family members said they knew who opened fire on Ruiz, but they didn't see the shooting.

"As you can see, the location is very, very dark, and so it made any type of direct observation difficult," Garcia said. "There's a lot of people who heard the incident, who heard the commotion, who heard the small arguments and of course heard the rounds go off."

Family said Ruiz was trying to protect his mother-in-law.

She got into a fight with her daughter, and took refuge at Ruiz's home.

Family members said the daughter then drove her boyfriend to the house on Keats, where he got into an argument with Ruiz and shot him.

People who were inside the home at the time of the shooting told police they knew who fired the shots.

As of 10:30 a.m., police were still searching for the shooter.
