The arrest of Mickey Wylie Bess Wednesday in connection with her 9-month-old son's drowning death last month has made the tragedy fresh for their neighbors.
"I look at the play-set in their yard and it makes me said," said one neighbor, who wanted to remain anonymous. "I keep expecting to see kids there."
Nine-month-old Michael Sanchez was one of those children who the neighbor was used to seeing at the home on Casa Verde Street.
According to new information released in an arrest warrant affidavit, the baby drowned in a backyard pool.
The affidavit stated that when paramedics arrived at the home on Oct. 6, they found Bess to be intoxicated.
They also found Michael dead in his crib, wrapped tightly in a wet blanket, the affidavit stated.
It stated that Bess, at first, refused to tell anyone how her son drowned, but later gave a statement saying that she woke up in the middle of the night and saw him floating in the pool.
Instead of calling for help, though, Bess said she wrapped him in a blanket and put him in his crib, then went back to bed herself, the affidavit stated.
The next day, Bess left her dead son in his crib while she and her two older children went to SeaWorld with a friend, the affidavit stated.
Bess' mother later found the baby in his crib not breathing, and called 911.
On Thursday, that crib, now unassembled, sat outside the home.
Neighbors said a new family recently moved into the residence and seemed to have no knowledge of what happened there.
A warrant for Bess' arrest was issued Wednesday and she was taken into custody on a charge of injury to a child, reckless by omission.
The affidavit stated that Michael also had a near-drowning in a bathtub in August while in Bess' care.
It also stated that it happened about a week after Bess' mother was named primary caregiver for all three of Bess' children.
Bess had agreed at that time to undergo alcohol and parent counseling, the affidavit stated.
